My mom just had a wonderful birthday. I am so honored to be her daughter and so grateful for her laughter, her heart and her faith. The whole family got together at her house this last Sunday and I got to capture the cousins in all their glory, playing, laughing and enjoying this amazingly mild Winter. We had short sleeves and I was laying in the grass. Lovely time. Sweet family, thank you so much for your love and our time together!

I've known Aaron and Erica since 2008 when I did their wedding at the Grapevine Hilton. A small private affair that centered on them. The priority of the day was celebrating their covenant to each other with just a few family and friends. It was an honor to be their photographer and it continues to be. They continue to grow in their love for one another. Recently, they have met several challenges in their lives and have done it with a grace and kindness that has inspired me. We pray for one another and that is the best gift of all. Sweet family, as always, thank you for you and for your hearts. I am blessed to know you.

Beloved: Brandon and Britney Cave 2012

This was a Beloved session (and a little bit of maternity). Brandon and Britney are the husband/wife team behind Healey Studios. Britney is my partner when I do weddings and I feel without an arm or leg if I do weddings without her. We enjoy working together and I'm sad that we aren't doing weddings officially only because I don't get to work with her regularly now. BUT, I still have some projects I want to work with her on (once she gets in a regular routine with the newest addition to their family).

As usual, I love working with Brandon and Britney. I brought my kiddos on this shoot and they were running amok behind me while I snapped photos. At one point, my youngest had to go to the bathroom and didn't bother to find a tree. I'm hoping that the cars that drove by realize that I didn't intend for him to go right where he was standing at the moment. LOL.

Brandon and Britney, thank you always for your friendship and your trust. I SOOO enjoyed seeing the new Miss Cave yesterday. What a beautiful treasure she is. Give her hugs and kisses for me and I want to visit longer soon, please!!Enjoy your pics. Love you guys bunches!

Beloved: Bryan and Maridee Dietzel 2012

Yep, it's right around the corner. V-Day!! I know it's not the most favorite holiday and A LOT of couples who have been married a while and/or have kids, young or older, just kind of figure, "Oh well, whatever." So I want to tell you a story about Brian and Maridee and why I've chosen them to highlight my BELOVED special for this Valentines 2012.

Bryan and Maridee are my small group leaders. They have been our Bible Study leaders for more than 10 years. You see, we all got married around the same time and ended up in the Newlywed class that Bent Tree Bible Fellowship held. Once our class ended, the couples in that class divided up into groups to continue Bible Studies and to grow as support groups for those of us newly married. We were divided up by location in the DFW area. Amazingly, and God directed, we (Broadus and I) ended up in Bryan and Maridee's group, along with a handful of other couples that we had already started making friends with.

Almost 11 years later, most of that core group of couples has remained and we have grown to include other couples (ourselves included) that don't attend Bent Tree as their home church but nevertheless wanted a group that would support and grow their marriage. We have had children together (because you REALLY need a village), we've lost parents, spouses, even jobs. We've built fences for one another, painted houses for one another, mended broken hearts with shared tears, prayers and hugs. The men meet sometimes one on one, sometimes as a group and just get to be with the "guys". The women meet for coffee or for tea or over at each others house for amazing food. Our kids have made Christmas cookies together and run through each others back yards.

I feel and believe that one of the biggest reasons our group has remained strong and intact is because of Bryan and Maridee's leadership. They have led us to be compassionate, to reach out, to be present and available for one another. They, by their example (and I mean by this, not some stoic, snooty religiousity, I mean, by their laughter, their ease, their realness), have attracted people like themselves, who genuinely want to know their God and want to grow their relationships with one another.

For this Valentine's I asked them to be "Poster" for the Beloved special. I believe like they do, that a marriage needs to be renewed regularly. I have to be reminded why I fell in love and what I love about my husband. Not because he's so horrible, but because being reminded keeps me "mindful" of him.

The Beloved photo shoot is about bringing back that space and time where you and your spouse "remember" each other. Call it a date, get dressed up, or go for a walk in the park. But for heaven's sake, don't let your wedding pictures be the last time you ever take pictures of your love or your relationship. Renew, remember, every year, every day, what brought you together, why you stay, why you said, "I do" to this person, why you chose this person over anyone else.Bryan and Maridee, thank you for you. We love you so much!

Kim and Kevin are the kind of people who are genuine and real. I've been taking pictures of their family from around the time I started my business and from when little bit was just a 9 month old baby. They have supported me and kept me as their photographer as I have grown my client base and changed prices and finally as my brand has come together so brilliantly in the last two years.

They are friends and fall into that category of client that if they called me at 2 in the morning I would come over and help however I could. I am proud to know them and proud to be their photographer. I appreciate you all so much. This photo shoot was a joy. As you can see, the personality of each girl is just a treasure. This is what I love to see and watch. They know me so well that they aren't afraid of my camera and I even get a performance like the one below. LOL. Love you all!

I've known Lenita and Garland for a long time. My Dad introduced me to them when they were engaged. Lenita took one of my Dad's classes at Dallas Theological Seminary and went to him to ask if I did weddings. (Apparently, my Dad likes to brag on me. he he) Well, honestly, that's all she wrote. As soon as I met Lenita and Garland we had an instant friendship. It was as if we'd known each other forever. They are truly family.

So, it is with tremendous pride, as also as Aunt Dee that I introduce the newest member of the Dunlap family. HE HE. Isn't he the most beautiful? Look at those lips, those cheeks. Much like his Mama, I couldn't stop giving sugar to this baby. He did so good for his first photo shoot (won't be the last, sis). I think Ms. Lenita was a little worried about all the spit up, but, look at all that beauty and NO spit up. We hid it really well. LOL. (So anyone worried about that with their baby pictures, don't. We have ways of making it disappear from the picture. YAY photoshop.)I love you all so much and you are so dear to my heart!! See you soon!

Spending some time each day writing what I'm grateful for. The church where I work part-time has a beautiful display of Poinsettias and I couldn't resist yesterday, just bringing my camera down to the sanctuary and spending a little time capturing these stunning Christmas stars. I'm grateful for this color, this season, for the little things that pop out if I'm willing to take a moment and just notice how gorgeous they are. :)

Meet the Boyd Family. Nurse Boyd works at my sons' school and is sooo sweet to my babies. No matter what the problem, fever, sore throat, or medication, she is the go-to lady. I love knowing that when my babies get sick, they get to go see Nurse Boyd. Well, I got to meet Blake, Shannon's hubby, and TTUBS (short for Texas Tech University Boyd). Personal Project: Renee Ball Maternity 2011

Renee is a dear friend of mine and it was such a delight when I talked with her a few months ago about modeling for a project I was working on. She agreed immediately. We actually squealed and cried a little (I did for sure) and then we waited.

We went out to Lavon Lake, that now looks like a desert, around 5:30 in the morning. (We grabbed coffee at the QT on the way and talked on the phone until we found the patch along the bridge where we could park our cars) Walking out was sombering (is that a word), to see how hard the drought had hit, but as we walked I started to see these amazing trees, which is why we wanted to shoot here in the first place.

Something so barren as a backdrop was exactly the juxtaposition that I wanted for a maternity shoot.

For now, the project is still a secret. I've got three or four more pieces before I do the unveiling. I'm excited to share them. Enjoy!!

Sweet Monica chose such an amazing fashionable color for this fall. This plummy yumminess matches the new set of Christmas Card templates I got from Tina Parker this year. They worked so well with the colors that I'm showcasing them here.

Monica has NEVER been afraid of color. She is vibrant, fun, warm and it shows every time we get together and in the choices she makes for her girls. I adore her and her family so much.

New Client: Hudnall Family 2011

I found a new location!! Whoo hoo!! Mom took us to the park (right around the corner from her house) in Lewisville and I'm in love. This park is IDEAL for kiddos. Huge, lots of places to climb and jump and swing, and I couldn't have asked for more perfect light. Most of the park is in the shade of ginormous trees and as the sun was setting (you can tell by the golden Fall light in the background), the sun streamed through the slats of the wood in the playground equipment. I had such a great time chasing Miss Hudnall around. She was a little spitfire and was very sure of what she wanted to play. He he. Those swings were her favorite but I think the slide got second best.

Mom, thank you so much for calling me and letting me play with your sweet girl. I had so much fun. Also, thanks for the tip on the new location. LOVE it!! I will have to take my boys there soon. I think they would adore it. Enjoy everyone!

ALWAYS ALWAYS love this family. They are dear and near to my heart. Cindy is a teacher in Allen, and we bonded at first through mutual friends and she needed a photographer. Cindy is one of my very first clients. She has literally been with me for almost 7 years. So, obviously, over that time, we have been through babies being born, illnesses, dishing about marriage and life and family, and have become, what I consider to be, very dear friends.

It has been a joke between us that when we first started doing pictures together Cindy was afraid of TOO MUCH color. Well, folks, look at her now in her bright green shirt that blended PERFECTLY with the backdrop. And she wore it with pride. Which she does now without hesitation.

Family your trust and friendship is a treasure to me. So happy for you guys and enjoy your holiday pics. Can't wait to get your Christmas cards!!!

Oh, and FYI for those that are interested. We went to Adriatica in McKinney. That cool castle in the background is the bell tower. How sweet is that?!!

Workshop: First Mini-Workshop 2011

I've been meaning to get these up recently, but I've been slammed. Which has been awesome and challenging at the same time. :) The season is upon me and I'm loving the weather, the fog Monday morning and the breeze today. Fabulous.

I've been offering one-on-one workshops for 1 hour to anyone with a camera. Doesn't matter what make or model and if you are a SAHM or a budding photographer who wants to start your own business.

Most of these classes start around sunrise or sunset. The "golden" hour is the most beautiful and it is a great place to start. We went to the White Rock Lake park for these photos and that morning there was a fun run and cycle fest. We got lots of practice trying to find a parking spot and doing motion shots.

The most amazing thing is the light and honestly, that is what I'm teaching. How to find that sweet light. Everything else, in my humble opinion, is just technique. If you can "see" light, you've got what you need to take great photos.

Kristina Harding is one of my long time clients. I have had the honor of capturing a lot of beautiful moments for her and her family and when she emailed and asked about doing an hour workshop, I was so happy to do this with her. She brought along a close friend and the three of us had so much fun just playing in a wet field of dew covered grass as the sun came up.

Here I talked about using anything white to get good reflection. There's no reason to buy big bulky reflectors that cost $60. I was wearing a white shirt (with a cami underneath), and I pulled off my shirt and used it as a reflector to get these gorgeous catch lights in the eyes and to just pop the skin. An old sheet or a towel or a shirt can work perfectly and costs a fraction of a big reflector. :) Just a tip.

Here we caught the dew on the grass and I talked about how water and the low lying sun can create amazing texture. We had fun playing with this "glowy" look and then looking at the back of everyone's camera. Totally fun!!

At the end, we played with the shutter speed, how to produce really cool looking blur and pan the camera along with a subject so they stay relatively sharp. YEA for the cycle fest, we had lots of people to practice on. he he. SOO much fun..

Ladies, you were a joy and a pleasure!!! Can't wait to do this again!!

The day we went to Adriatica in McKinney, the sky was grey and stormy. It made for perfect lighting and moody skies.

As always, being with the Hughes is easy. I love watching them love on one another. I love that they like each other, and that they laugh so quickly. We had a lot of fun climbing and walking and exploring. Hey, even jumping fences. he he. :)

It is a delight of my job that I get to watch so many of the kiddos grow up. I get to see them become young ladies and young men. This is absolutely true with Miss Kate. She has blossomed into a young lady. It was so cute because the first thing she said to me when I walked into the house for the shoot was, "I haven't seen you in a while." And I laughed. It sounded so mature and a little like, "Well, you need to come visit more often." I adore that!!

As you can see, we had fun laughing, giggling and I chased her all over the park. She is so at ease with me that she just talked and talked the whole way.

Miss Kate, thank you for your personality and just being you. I love being your photographer!!

Travel Portraits: The Ohlson Family 2011

Every two years, I get to go visit with a family that has always been my OWN. It's like visiting a brother and sister and nieces and nephews. The trip is never long enough, even though we've extended it by one day in the last four years. Naomi and I always need more time to catch up and I feel we leave without finishing all the stories that get started. I am accepted into this family as one of them, and find that I slip right in and feel a loss when I have to leave.

Tim was my student when I taught high school English at Faith Academy about 17 years ago. We have remained in touch sporadically, until the last 6 years, where we discovered the brilliance of the internet and Facebook. My first trip out to Oregon introduced me to his sweet, gorgeous wife, Naomi and his beautiful family.

This trip Tim surprised me with a day trip to the coast. It was a three hour trip out from Portland, but over some of the most magnificent hills and ridges. The trees alone would've kept me busy for days. I got to use Naomi's Ipad to catch some of the road trip.

Seeing the Pacific ocean after almost 12 years was a very emotional experience for me. While taking pictures I hid behind the camera crying. I grew up near Pasacao Beach in the Philippines and used to go swimming there all the time. The Pacific has a huge pull for me, and has only been soothed by living in Texas along the Shawnee Trail, where the sky is massive and can pull me just about the same way.

As you'll see in the pics, I am always blessed. It is God who surprises me most, bringing me the perspective to appreciate every way he touches my life.

Talk about a castle with beautiful princesses. I was invited to a glorious gathering of the wonderful Huffman ladies. We played with beads, preened in front of mirrors, painted our nails, wore boas and clipped wild orchids in our hair. I do enjoy the exclusivity of being invited to the best parties. :) I have such a great job!!

New Clients: Mike and Christine 2011

Mike and Christine are in my Lifegroup from church. I am enjoying watching them go through this exciting time of their life. Being pregnant for the first time is scary, amazing, joyous but most of all, a blessing. Christine has prayed for me and my family for years. She prays like one of the ladies I grew up with in the church back in the Philippines. Lola Negreti could move mountains, truly. She prayed many people through illness, doubt and crisis and the results were always humbling. Christine has that same faith and that same strength and I adore her devotion and want to have that same commitment.

It was an honor to take Mike and Christine's pictures. Right at sunset at the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano. You can see how much they adore each other. I think one of the best things about the shoot was watching Mike reveal himself and his sense of humor more. I laughed so much.

Sweet family, thank you so much for a wonderful time. I love you both!! Can't wait to meet the new Mr. Partee.

Personal: Happy 10th Anniversary!

Broadus and I have been married for 10 years as of July 28th. This was such a meaningful milestone for me. For many reasons, some of them being that we are now in the double digits, we have two beautiful boys, not babies anymore, BOYS. The significance of this isn't lost on me. We are parents, partners and best friends. I believe that God brought us together. I'm not making that up.

My sister set us up. We met after she suggested he come over for dinner one night. He was leading a Bible study nearby and Sis thought it would be a good idea to get to know one another before the Bible study started. He came over. I met him at the door and did a bit of a double take. He had a fedora, a trench coat and an armful of flowers. But, here's the key, an understated charm. He wasn't putting the "mack" on me. I think what made him so interesting was he showed up at the door fully aware that he had dressed up and brought flowers, now let's hang out, eat and talk. End of story. We talked about literature, politics, languages, and he shared stories about his time as a missionary in The Netherlands.

When he left that night, Dawn met me in the hall between our bedrooms, brushing her teeth and giving me the sister look like, "so, whaddya think?" I smiled kind of absently and said, "He's really nice." And she shrugged, went to spit in the sink, came back and said, "Well, if nothing else I think he'll be a great friend." I nodded agreeably and literally, inside my head, I heard this: This is the man you are going to marry.

I'd never heard that before. I mean, I dated guys that I WANTED to hear that, but it never happened with those guys. And when my mom kept telling me I would KNOW. (I thought she was full of it) Sure enough, I still do KNOW. Like a solid rock, an anchor to what is real, is this love I have for my husband. I respect him so deeply and look up to him as a man and an individual.

We spent the last weekend in Jefferson, TX, staying at my favorite bed and breakfast. I got to introduce him to Donna and her amazing breakfast. The Benefield House is an oasis. From there we went to the lake and spent time with John Winn, who runs the Caddo Outback Backwater Tours. He took us out through slews and swamp. We saw Blue Heron and Egrets and so many species of plant life. I know it might sound boring, but it was the most beautiful thing I've seen in a while. I came back with a ton of gorgeous and creepy black and whites that I'm planning on blowing up and hanging in my house.

Donna, thank you always for your hospitality and great style and cooking. Thank you for sharing your testimony over breakfast with us. I always love hearing it and hearing how God works.

John, thank you for all your knowledge. I learned so much about your lake and appreciated so much hearing your love for it. It shows in how you treated us as your guests.

Despite the heat, these little ladies gave me some of the cutest and dearest charm. The older Miss M is one of my favorite little girls, and is very particular about her photographer. I have to make sure I pay enough attention and that I notice the beautiful outfits she wears. I adore how Mom always has just the right accessories. I would LOVE to hire her as my stylist, because with the light, the setting and those colors, the photos just pop!! Monica and Matt, thank you for meeting me at dusk, even with the traffic. Personal: Private Property 2011

My favorite wheat field sits in the southeast corner of Parkwood and Lebanon. Last week a sign went up showing that it was the future site of another business. I've photographed in these wheat fields for the last seven years.

In the early Summer afternoon the old tin shed and its blue graffiti shimmered at the northeast corner, wood planks bending, weather beaten against the rusty bolts that have bled along the corrugated sides. A leaning mail box sat at the edge of Lebanon just before the curb and I watched it disintegrate and finally disappear. Now the shed is being dismantled. Only the frame stands today. The roof and panels in a heap at the back of the property.

Next week even the frame will be gone. The boards sectioned off into a pile to be hauled off to the local dump.

In past Summers, as the sun set, I watched as that old shed created the kind of reflection that lifted shadows out of a person's face. Or, when I left the shed blurry in the background, it became the perfect shade of grey. Even the bright blue graffiti scrawled across the west wall gave my photographs a texture and a sense of place.

And the wheat, as the sun disappeared into the horizon, would turn violet and a blue ghostly-white. There would always be enough light then to make a person seem ethereal: delicate in a way too perfect for this world.

Now, the field has been harvested for the last time. I won't walk through it again, camera thumping against my hip while dust rises and makes me sneeze. In a few weeks the bulldozers and dump trucks will come through while I'm at home folding towels or putting away dishes. It will be like any other day, hot and a little dry with white puffy clouds. The sky won't well up with water and break. There won't be any relief.

These machines will prepare the land, bringing in gravel and sand, maybe even a starter of rebar. Men in white and yellow hats will begin the work, breaking for lunch in the thin strip of Acacia and Texas Ash.

8 years ago (I can't believe it's been that long) my good friend, Celise and I got pregnant around the same time. Both of us were surprised and excited and terrified all at once. But we had each other to share the experience with. We ate, we laughed until we had tears rolling down our cheeks. We ate some more.

Throughout it all, we never imagined what would bloom between the sons we gave birth to. Riah was born on March 14 and Leo just ten days later. One of Riah's very first baby pictures is alongside Leo in the library of the church where Celise works. They look like twins. They did then, they do now. And more amazing is that they may only see each other 3 or 4 times a year, and even so, it's as if not a day goes by. They finish each others sentences and the world is just a wonder.

Celise and I got a little teary eyed laughing and watching them BE together, just like brothers, and we have concluded that God has played a little "tee hee" on us in a joyful, wonderful way. This is a long post, but I couldn't NOT share any of these. To our twins, Celise, you are a light of my heart.

I'm so grateful to live in America, to be able to talk about God and to go to church and not suffer imprisonment or death. I am grateful that my children are able to learn beside children from all over the world, to see beyond color. I am grateful that our family has seen the blessings of having resources and organizations like the Gifted and Talented programs through school, and Autism Speaks. I am grateful for the men and women who have taken the biggest challenge of all and put themselves on the front lines, believing in something bigger than themselves and willing to sacrifice in sometimes difficult and harrowing ways so that we all continue to live in this amazing country. Happy July 4th, everyone.

Our Bible Study group has had babies this year!! I certainly love the opportunity to not only photograph but get lots of sweet baby cuddles. Yesterday, I got to be formally introduced to the new Mr. Worthington. He was so sleepy and so soft. No matter how many times I do this I forget how tiny they are when they are born. He was 9 days old, as of this picture. We just scooted him right in to the one week window. He he. He's doing so well, as are his proud Mom and Dad. Welcome, sweet one.

Personal: Cousins 2011

My sister and I got to hang out for breakfast last week and that brought all of the cousins together. I thought it was interesting that the twins and my youngest all hung out indoors with Mom, watching PBS and playing games. But the two oldest cousins went straight outside and pulled out papers, pens, crayons and sat so quietly and kindly together. Ever so often there would be a question about what color to use or what kind of drawing would they do next. It reminded me so much of my sister and I when we were kids, just sitting together, drawing or writing stories. I am so blessed in my life to get to witness this.

P.S. Some folks have been asking what kind of filter or action I'm using to get the warm glow. Honestly, I use a warming polarizer on my 50mm and just pick early morning or late afternoon light. Not too many gimmicks, I promise. :)

July Minisession Special 2011

The shoot lasts 30 minutes (because of the heat) and it is $125 per family of 4 and a CD with 25 retouched favorites. We will start shooting at 7pm. Technical Difficulties 2011

Hey all!! Just a quick little tidbit about what's going on over here. So in the last week both my printers have died, my computer started making this noise like a bag of legos was being jostled around, and I've had to recalibrate my monitor. Not to mention, now, that Photoshop CS5 won't even open up. I've kind of had it. I'm not sure what else is going to fall apart at this point.

This last weekend, my amazing husband fixed the computer and discovered a drive that wasn't supposed to even be in there. All my photos and such were safe and intact (thank you for back-up drives). However, once he got it running, the computer wouldn't recognize my CD/DVD RW drives. So all the CDs I'm supposed to be making for my clients aren't getting made. At the same time, Lightroom has now lost the catalog of all my photos. NOW, thank God that LR is not a storage program. BUT I did have to spend time reimporting all the photo shoots I was still processing.

THEN Sunday, I discovered that the monitor and the printer were not jiving on color. What I was seeing in one place didn't match up in the other. So I spent the day recalibrating everything. A WHOLE other day later, after calibration, my large wide format printer, the beautiful R1900 by Epson, completely died. To have it serviced will cost almost as much as buying a new one.

Yesterday, my little printer, my Epson RX680, also died. No clue why, just up and quit. Broadus (my husband), took the thing apart, cleaned it, and sure enough, the error message is frozen on the screen. Nothing works. It will also have to be serviced and that will cost as much as buying a new one.

*sigh*

Last night I ordered a new little printer. I don't have the reserve cash right now to buy another big one. So no more album making for the time being. And I have an album I need to make for a client. ARRRRGGG!!!

This morning, I went to make a CD of photos for one of my clients, and the CD burner wouldn't open. So I had to coax it to get it to open. (Read: I Fonzied it) Then, I started to create 2 collages for a client and NOW, NOW, PEOPLE, my Photoshop CS5 will not open.

Those of you that pray, say a little one for me. I'm going to go say my prayers too.

It's been a while since I've been to the Fort Worth Stockyards, so I was excited to be back and most especially capturing the love between Leah and Nathan. Their little man came along for the first 1/2 hour and delighted all of us. I adore his big smile. :) Once he went off with his grandparents, Leah, Nathan and I got to walk through the streets finding beautiful light and rustic settings. I had so much fun hanging out and hearing about how they met and how long they've been together (5 years). They had such an easy way between them, so comfortable to be around. For her second shoot over the weekend, we decided to go for a more rustic setting. The abandoned railroad tracks off of Exchange and 75 are one of my favorite spots to shoot. On the way there, however, I noticed that the harvesters were out and the fields were just the most amazing shade of gold, and I knew I had to suggest it. Michelle didn't even miss a beat. She was up for whatever and as usual, was a complete professional in front of the camera. LOVED working in the dying light of the day. Enjoy you all!!

The Hoggs have been dear friends for a long time. I've been excited about this shoot for several weeks now. Kate called and told me that she had reserved a spot for photos at the McKinney Cotton Mill. I have wanted to shoot there for some time and was thrilled when she said that was what she wanted to do also.

In the years that I have photographed this family, they have always allowed room for my creativity and artistry. I am sooo lucky that I have many clients now who choose me for this particular reason. Not just for the standard family photo or the happy children in every shot, even if they are cute ;). As a result, I get to create photos like these, some of my favorites of the whole year so far. LOVE this!!

Kate and Tom, as usual, thank you for your willingness to be yourselves in front of a camera, which is NOT easy, I know. And to all the kids, thank you for just hanging out and having fun. I adore all of you so much.

Daddy & Me: The Huffman Men 2011

With Father's Day near in approach, I thought it would be a good idea to present the possibility of using a session to capture the man in your life with your children. This idea has a lot of permutations. You could even make it a generational shoot with grandpa, Dad and kiddos. Whatever you decide to do, remember this is an awesome gift.

Jeff and Mr. B. spent a wonderful hour at Arbor Hills with me playing and skipping rocks. My delight in these gentlemen is that they are absolutely as they appear: at ease with one another and completely at home with hanging out along a creek bank. I have three men in my house and have learned the simplicity of being present without requiring more. It's still an alien concept to me as a woman, but I miss it when I'm away from my family. So it was a relaxing and comforting time spent photographing the Huffman men.

Gentlemen, thank you for your hospitality. I really enjoyed spending time with you both!

Seniors: Morgan Robertson Cap and Gown 2011

This is the last "official" shoot with Miss Morgan before she graduates. There will be a couple of unofficial shoots, however, so look out for those. he he.

As you can see, Morgan is the consummate professional, but I think she and I both agreed that there needs to be a new ruling on the GOWN portion of the graduation ceremony. No more baggy smocks. Whatever happened to a fashion update, sleek, cool, still classy. Hmmm.

That being said, Morgan still knows how to rock a look, regardless of her feelings about the clothes. We had fun making the cap and gown a little more interesting.

Oh, and I couldn't resist adding the cute and fun candy and bubblegum, since she's having candy at her graduation party and wanted to use these pictures to decorate her table with. he he. Great idea!!

Six Month Portraits: Mr. Grether 2011

Tips & Tricks: Processing My Style

I've had a few questions of late regarding my style of shooting. Specifically, why does it take two weeks to process pictures, why can't I just shoot and burn a CD from the camera? HA HA HA. Sorry, had to laugh a little. Okay, so let me answer and if anyone has questions, feel free to email me: dee@cocoriahphoto.com.

I shoot in RAW. It is not a lossy file like JPEG, so I have as much visual information as I need. It's a great place to start.

I upload directly to Lightroom. While it is uploading I cull out the photos that are out of focus, etc. My processing is done with presets that I have designed myself and presets that I use from Lilyblue Photography. You can check that out here.

Once I'm done processing (which primarily means I bump midtones, remove blemishes, adjust for contrast and saturation or convert to black and white), I then export to my file folder under the family name and date.

I generally view the photos on my desktop and cull again down to the strongest set. From these I choose my absolute favorites, anywhere from 10-20 (sometimes more if the time allows).

These favorites I pull in to Photoshop CS5. Here I do the fine tune work. One picture can take anywhere from 1-2 minutes to make specific artistic touches. I use Totally Rad Actions and the Essential Black and White from Nichole Van. The particular actions I use are for brightening eyes, sharpening the photo, clearing up skin and enriching the black and white. It really isn't more than that, honestly.

This process is repeated many many times, however, and during a busy season like now, that will put picture readiness out about two weeks.

I'm posting a sample of what the RAW SOOC picture looks like, what it looks like after Lightroom and what it looks like once it has been retouched in Photoshop.

On Friday, despite, blustry winds and hot sunshine, these four attractive young people got all gussied up and went to the Harvest Christian Junior-Senior Banquet. :) What I LOVE is that the gorgeous modelesque beauty in the black and pink is my niece by marriage. When I first met Amy she was 7. This adorable bundle of energy, all smiles and dancing and twirling in circles every time she got the chance. Now, I get to be a part of this special time in her life, growing in to the woman God created. I am honored to be your Auntie Dee. Thank you for asking me to do this for you. It blessed my heart. So one of the MANY HUNDREDS of perks, alongside shooting amazing clients, is that I get to take my nieces out to a big field of decimated bluebonnets and PLAY in the light. he he. We had so much fun chasing each other. It was cool on Saturday, and the flowers were trying their hardest, but they weren't the lush gooey blue from the weekend before. No worries. Personal: Easter Portraits from the Jones 2011

So I wanted to get some thoughts down regarding CONTRASTING colors. I know I've talked about this before but it bears reviewing the reasons why.

I know for a lot of folks, the idea of Easter is the permission to wear WHITE again, and so when pictures come up in conversation white takes over. Of course, that and lambs and little bunnies. I've got nothing against any of that. But I have a couple of observations.

White looks great on skin tones that are darker. Why? Because of the contrast. White people in white tend to not only WASH OUT in the Spring sun, but just look more pasty because of it. Add to that when families decide the entire family is going to wear white. Then you have a white blight that has now taken over the photo.

In eye tracking studies done on random photos in color and black and white, the human eye tends to hit on the BRIGHTEST spot first. What is brighter than white?

When choosing colors for Spring and Easter photos, think of what is joyous and celebratory about the season and what we are celebrating. Ask yourself what colors look wonderful on you and those you love. Then last, look at your surroundings. Bluebonnets will show up blue and slightly purple on most digital cameras, wear what contrasts with blue or perhaps what can compliment. Green, red, salmon, yellow. Don't be afraid of color. It absolutely makes a difference in the end.

So they just keep getting bigger and they keep turning into little men. Baby fat is slimmed into long lanky boy parts, and the once un-self-conscious babies are now hamming for the camera. :) Oh, well. That didn't stop me from inviting them to play in the car around sunset. I'm not sure what it is about yanking seats back, opening all the doors and climbing under and over consoles and backseats. Newborns are the sweetest, most tender work that I do. Of course, my preference is to photograph newborns being held by family members, interacting with mommy and daddy and brothers and sisters. That's not always possible, for one reason or another, but for the Huffmans, it is always possible. For that I'm very grateful, because it gives me the opportunity to show that newborns are not born in a vacuum, they are born into the arms of the ones that love them. Truly special.

So with my trusty tripod and remote release, I set up shop in the backyard and decided to try to catch my family (myself included this time). There were tears and the dog did slink away at one point. Laura and Marc do not make ugly babies. EVER. I've done portraits for them since the first little one arrived and I'm always delighted. This is the newest and latest Grether. Fresh and one week old. Laura and I had fun carting him through her huge back yard and plopping him among the leaves. He was very amiable. But of course he had been fed and bathed and was snuggled in his blue bubbie from his big sister. We did get these adorable naked baby shots indoors with a space heater and plenty of window light. He was pink he was so warm and Laura and I sweat like two old men, but we had a blast. he he. Enjoy, you all. I can't wait to see him again on Saturday.

Tips & Tricks: Before and After

I get questions a lot about what I do to the photos after I take them. Actually, what I get asked is why it takes a week or two to get pictures up in a gallery. Why can't I just upload them from my camera? Better yet, why can't they be viewed the same day?

So here's my answer:

I'm not a shoot and burn kind of photographer. I'm a little prideful about it but I consider what I do an art. So that means that when I take photos, that's just the beginning. All that comes after shooting the photo is still part of my process of creating art.

Here's a little demonstration of what I do:

1. I shoot in RAW. That means that the images have to be converted to JPEG. This is technical but integral to how I work. RAW lets me get as much data as possible in the picture and it gives me the best leverage.

I shoot fast like a photojournalist, so that means not all of my shots have the benefit of the best light or the perfect set up. I'm not that kind of photographer. Ergo, when I shoot in RAW, I can adjust the photo for exposure, contrast, color and remove small blemishes or distractions.

JPEG doesn't give me that kind of lee-way. What I shoot is pretty much STUCK like that if I shoot in JPEG. The photo has been COOKED, as they say, and I can't change it much.

Depending on how many photos I've taken, this process can take one or two hours.

2. Once I'm done converting RAW to JPEG, with the required adjustments, I will pull 4 or 5 PIECES that I LOVE as an artist. I take them in to Photoshop and transform them in to something better. I raise the bar, so to speak. This can take 3 to 4 hours.

So here are some examples of what I'm talking about:

Sometimes the changes are this subtle. I don't need to do much. But I can see it in the photos when I take them, their potential. Taking a photo from good to great.

Here's another. One of my favorite before and after shots of the season:

Notice it's a little dark, and they look a little blue. I SAW the light. I SAW how warm it was and I wanted to return that to the photo. So here's what I did.

Just a bump. It takes a minute or two, since I have my process down now. But I would love to do this all the time. With EVERY SINGLE PICTURE. I just love the way I can coax a good photo into something I SAW first with my eyes and my heart.

Here's one more:

I wanted to bring out the warmth in the wood and the color in the boy's cheeks and smile. Here's what I did with it.

When I take pictures, I just begin to create. The full circle of what I do is also in DEVELOPING the photo, just like if I was shooting film and using a darkroom. I'm DEVELOPING my vision.

If you see your pictures for the first time, you will see all the BEFORES. I ask you to pick your favorites and then work my magic. I love amazing you and delighting you and helping you see what I saw when I looked through the lens.

Tips & Tricks: What About THOSE Shots?

I experiment in every shoot. I'm looking for motion, for e-motion, for those moments. Recently this question has come up again. What about that shot that is out of focus? What about the blur? What about the chopped off head? What about the angle?

This isn't an excuse, but I make mistakes in my experiments, I'll admit. And I want to. Sometimes what I do works, sometimes it doesn't. I learn by failure.

In every shoot I know that there are going to be the shots that my clients want. The standard portraits, no blur, only the background in that beautiful fuzzy out of focus wonder. But after I get those shots I start hunting for the capture, the movement.

This is one reason why:

I just waited for Miss S. to start running, to jump, to forget that I was there, and then it was click, click, click, click. I'm not going for perfect. I'm going for interpretation, for that wind, for her leap. Yes, I know that her face is partly cut off. I know that her hand in the last frame is out of focus. But her hair is flailing behind her and her jeans pocket is covered in girly swirls. This is closer to what I see when I watch a child play, pieces. Not the whole thing.

Here's another:

We were walking to school. Morning light is starting to be my favorite light over sunset. It's cleaner and wet most days. It has a different feel. I wanted to get those sleepy shadows and the haze of that first glare, the dazed look on my son's face as we trumped on. Do I know that my husband is blurry behind my son? Yes. But his shadow is imposing and yet protective. Connor is lit by the light and is predominant, but that father is there, not far away. Do I know that Connor's face is almost obliterated by the sunlight in the next frame? Yes. But day does that, breaking through our sleep, our groggy state, and he is my baby that likes to wake up slow. When the sun hits his hair, he lights up, pale and bright and still a little asleep. In the last frame I cut and angled the shot. He was talking to me and starting to wake up a little. You can see his face, and the angle brings the energy.

Last, but not least, one of my favorite experiments, but I don't do it much. Most people I've done it for don't like it. But I still practice it because it makes me feel like I've caught something behind someone's back I wasn't supposed to see.

I was inspired by Jonathan Canlas and his AMAZING work, and wanted to explore this angle for myself. I love the little grin my Riah is giving me in the first frame, Connor looking right at the lens completely out of focus. I saw the sneak, the pull on his papa's suspenders, his "look at me." In the second frame was the groom kissing his stepdaughter after the wedding. I caught it over the flowers of the older sister. It was quick and tender and I wouldn't have caught it any other way. It is one of my favorite photos. Sweetness. So I'm looking over shoulders now, past the people in front of me, letting them be my frame into something else, the world behind them or just past their periphery. Try it. It might change the way you see.

This was such a beautiful party. Honestly. Not only were the decorations and the location wonderful, so were the people. Sarah and Joe, I know the party was bittersweet, but I wish you all the best as you move, and Joe, many blessings on this milestone in your life. Tips and Tricks: Why I take THOSE pictures.

Details are one of the most important elements in any story. It's what creates a setting and a space for the story to evolve inside. I take all kinds of detail shots. The little napkins at parties, the candy dish, the decorations. Most of what people expect to see. BUT, I also take detail shots that aren't expected. I've had several clients ask me why, and then I show them the album design, and they see how it comes together.

I wanted to share a little of my favorite detail shots from Jonathan and Tauri's wedding in Jamaica and then show how I implemented them. So if you get your photos online and you're wondering, "Why did she take that shot?" Here's why:

New Artists: Shawna Kirk and the Sound

As usual I'm loving my work with Gospel artists and singers. This group has been no exception. They were so much fun. We met early in Carrollton, and despite driving all night from Louisiana to come get their pictures taken, they were in a great mood.

Shawna and her group are under David Frazier's record label. (Check out his website. Those images were from our first shoot together. I got to hang with him in the recording studio while he worked.)

Before Shawna's shoot even started, I was given a wonderful compliment from David when he introduced all of us. "This is Dee. She sees things you would never think of." Whoo hoo!! :) Thank you, David, for trusting me with your concepts.

We all had so much fun together. We laughed and they sang hymns, and we sweat in the morning sun coming up. Love this job!!

(BTW, isn't Shawna one of the most beautiful ladies you've ever seen? Gentlemen, you all looked very dapper. Very handsome group. :) he he.)

The very first thing Mr. man said to me when I met him was, "I'm going to be shy today." He he. And he was, the first time. Very curious and thoughtful and not up for a lot of smiles. The second time, he was a charmer. We had to see the baby frogs by the side of the ravine, we had to look for bunny rabbits, we giggled at Mommy and Daddy as they made jokes, and the best of all: Mr. Ellis sang. He he. This princess needs no introduction, but honestly, how could I not? She is precious to me. She knows me so well that she comes to me and smiles when I see her. Better yet, she has charmed my husband so much that he can't be in the room without holding her and talking to her. He likes to walk her all through the house and tell her about the pictures on the wall, and the decorations, and she is just enamored in a man who will talk to her. (Oh, and apparently, she's not just charmed my husband, but yes, that is my youngest son, Connor, giving her the squeezes. He thinks she's beautiful. Or as he says, "She's beauty, isn't she, Mama?")he he.

New Clients: Ben & Delina Price McPhaull & Family 2010

This gorgeous family found me on Flickr. Delina and I have swapped macro photography thoughts and questions. Lo and behold, they have moved to Texas, and how lucky am I, but she calls me to do the family (the WHOLE family) pictures. These sweet, sweet people live in Cleburne, and their land is gorgeous. I had fun capturing all the kiddos, as usual, but also, just chatting and learning more about each of the families here.

I was to take their pictures right before Christmas, but ended up doing emergency surgery for my arm, if you remember. It has totally worked according to God's plan. Ben and I talked about ministry and his interest in learning more in Bible Exposition. Of course, my father teaches Bible Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary.

It's amazing to me how pieces always seem to come together.

It is always a pleasure every July 4th, to welcome the Pauluzzi family with open arms. I worked with Larkin indirectly for several years when I was teaching with Carrollton ISD. Portraits: Frisco Central Park

Gen brought her kiddos out to the Frisco park and we had a blast. I loved that when I got out of my car the kids all ran to me, "Miss Dee, Miss Dee, can we play now?" They already know how I work and they love me for it. As a result, I can get AMAZING pictures from them. This is why I feel like it's good to know the technical side of photography, but I'm not the amazing one, it's what I get from my subjects that makes amazing.

I've always said I feel like a Discovery Channel scientist. Out in the wild, observing normal childlike behaviour, letting the environment be. Don't mess with the natives. :) That ought to me my tag line on my logo.

Gen, thank you for the best hour. I loved capturing these beauties. There's more, but here are some teaser highlights.

Portraits: Gen Ray Family 2010

I need to include that two of the kiddos belong to Gen's good friend, Chris. he he. Hi, Chris!! He's a budding photographer, btw, and so I enjoyed talking a little tech with him. Hope to do more in the future.

The kiddos were hot, sweaty, and we took breaks running into the house and staying cool and running back outside. It felt like a walk in the desert. The heat was like a wall. I was drenched when I got in the car, and the kiddos were drenched when they got back in the house.

Despite it all, I got some great "quick" pics. I'm getting more of Gen's kiddos at the park tomorrow night and I'm super excited. I'm bringing my boys as well. So we're going to all play together at sunset. MUCH cooler.

Chris, we will miss you and the boys. Hope to get together soon though. Gen and Chris and all the kiddos, thank you so much for your friendship and letting me spend half an hour playing in your backyard.
